Another notable home in Austin Terrace is the Eugene Cunningham home, built in 1929. Cunningham, was a renowned author of both fiction and non-fiction books, according to The Trost Society’s article titled, “Triggernometry in El Paso, the 1929 Eugene Cunningham Mansion.”
The article states that “Cunningham built this new home for his young family and the resulting beauty stands today at the corner of Cumberland Circle and Pennsylvania in Austin Terrace.” The article goes on to speculate that the architect might have been Otto Thorman, “due to the design, date of completion and area of town,” but it may have been “a Bradford Hardie Jr. plan.”
The Trost Society article goes on to mention that the home was built by Ponsford and Sons at a planned cost of $19,000 and featured a red-variegated brick pattern with 9 rooms, one of which was a “specially designed sound-proof library where Cunningham could do his work as an author.”
Cunningham lived in the home for only four years, before noted El Paso banker Sam Young bought the home, and lived in it until 1957. Later notable occupants of the home included the Ray Caballero family. Mr. Caballero, a prominent local attorney, served as mayor of El Paso from 2001 to 2003. His former wife, the late Dorothy McGill, resided in this home and lovingly maintained it until her death in 2010. She also planted some of the massive Live Oaks which now grace the property and add to the beauty of the street.
